School is the best place to work

Children should work in school and not in factories, fields or mines! In the past year IBIS intensified the fight against child labor with the campaign "Stop Child Labour - School is the best place to work."

In the spring of 2011, the campaign received 793,000 Danish kroner from Danida to implement "Media Competition for Schools 2013' in collaboration with the daily newspapers Politiken and Ekstra Bladet. Here, 6th to 10th graders compete to create the best newspaper or website framing child labor.

At the conference Partnership2012 the campaign has been in dialogue with Danish companies about taking responsibility and guarantee child labor free products.

The campaign works to eliminate all forms of child labor and secure quality education for all children.

Children, who go to school, have the opportunity to get a better future. An option the child labours do not have. Adults can easily get a job and a better salary if they do not have to compete with children who work for low wages. Once child labor has been abolished, parents can work with a decent salary and the children can go to school.

The campaign believes

Child labor is not a simple issue, and there need to get attention from schools, parents, authorities, companies and attitudes in the society must be changed.

The job market should not be designed to become child-friendly. On the contrary, schools should be designed to ensure the protection and survival of vulnerable children. In practice it is possible, and it is every child's right.

Children's rights are universal

All children should have the opportunity to go to school, no matter where they live. Any work that prevents children under 15 years from getting an education is prohibited by international conventions. Very dangerous and harmful work is prohibited for children under 18 years.

Globally today, one in seven children work instead of going to school. It is harmful to their health and their physical, mental, spiritual, moral and social development.
